What parts of your life are you comfortable receiving in?
What parts of your life are you comfortable giving in?
It is very likely that there are areas of your life where you tend to give with more ease or receive with more ease. This doesn’t make us good or bad people, or good or bad with money.
It simply means we have an opportunity to create balance in our financial lives. Balance will give us peace of mind and ease. And we can’t find balance between giving and receiving without cultivating self-awareness.
Here are some ways to create self-awareness and find balance between giving and receiving:
1) Clarity on what your needs are:
Do you know how much money you need to pay for your money “musts?” If you don’t know the answer to this question, give yourself the gift of clarity and start to track your spending.
Understanding your monthly financial needs will help you determine if you have more room to give or need to pull back. It is a form of financial self-sabotage to give resources away without clarifying your own needs first.
2) Clarity on what your desires are
Once we map out our needs, we can layer on wants. You can ask yourself, “What do I deeply desire?”
If we don’t know our desires we tend to miss out on potential opportunity. We will not recognize an opportunity to receive if we don’t know what we need and want. We can only fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle if we take the puzzle out of the box and start trying to fit the pieces together.
A budget is a puzzle. When all the pieces fit together, we can achieve satisfaction and clarity. Many people hold the limiting belief that a budget is constricting (I used to). What shifts for you if you choose to believe that a budget is a tangible step by step plan to help you achieve your needs AND your desires.
3) Self-Worth
One block to fulfilling our wants is worthiness. Many of us struggle with shame, guilt and feelings of undeserving. It is crucial to heal these wounds before we can truly receive in a healthy balanced way.
We tell ourselves stories about ourselves. What stories are you telling yourself about what you can have? What did you learn from your family of origin about your worth? Begin to notice your beliefs and where they are present in your financial life. Our thoughts are just that, thoughts, and we can choose not to believe them.
4) A short exercise for partners:
Sit down with your partner and take turns answering the following questions:
-Do I allow the space for you to fully give? If not, what would you like me to improve?
-Are you currently receiving all that you need? Is there an area I can improve upon?
5) Ask For Help
Asking for help can be a game changer. We did not evolve to understand money the way it exists in our society today. If you are struggling to answer some of the questions in today’s newsletter, book a free consultation with me to talk about it.
