Do your workplace benefits include Financial Wellness programming?
Financial Coaching is entering workplace well-being programs. Companies are starting to expand their wellness programs to include financial wellness from a more holistic perspective.
Here are a few things you can do right now to improve your financial wellness at work:
1) Get some plants for your office. You may be thinking, “What does this have to do with money?” or “Tammy, I am not a plant person.” Connecting to nature, and having someone green in your office will boost your mental and physical health. Plants breathe out so we can breathe in. We are all plant people in the sense that all of us are innately connected to nature. Improving your mental health is correlated with improving your financial health.
2) Say it with me: “Money can be stressful because I am human.” None of us are born with financial literacy. Most of how our economy works does not align with our nervous system and our evolutionary tendencies. Accepting ourselves as we are ~with compassion~ is a gift you deserve to give yourself.
3) Consider asking your HR and Benefits Department if your workplace has financial wellness as a supportive resource.
In the past, financial wellness may have been limited to offerings such as a lunch and learn on how to use a retirement calculation tool, or understanding how much the company matches for their 401k. While those things are important, financial wellness is also tied to our mental health, emotions, and life experiences.
4) Check your pay stub to identify your salary after benefits and taxes, also known as your take home pay. Explore where your take-home pay is going. Track your spending. Are you allocating self-care to your monthly budget? Are you spending money on what brings you joy?
